Sanctuary!

This is the Notre Dame Cathedral facade on the Universal backlot for the 1923 version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

No detail is spared.

    1. The actual, built set was only up to the horizontal area above the row of carved statues that are up from the 3 gothic doorways.

Everything higher, including the rose window and the twin bell towers, was a glass or matte painting, that was filmed and "married" to the physical filmed set, in post production.

  2. If I remember correctly, it stayed up for quite some time. I think the outdoor church scenes in The Wolf Man, nearly 20 years later, were filmed at the Notre Dame Cathedral.
